Macular Degeneration Awareness Month
February is Macular Degeneration Awareness Month. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of central vision loss among adults over 50. Early detection and management can slow progression and help maintain quality of life. AMD affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.
AMD occurs in two forms: dry and wet. Dry AMD is more common, and typically progresses slowly over several years. It is caused by the thinning of the macula with age. Wet AMD is less common, but typically causes quicker vision loss. It is caused by abnormal blood vessels growing in the back of the eye and damaging the macula.
Schedule an appointment if you notice blurred or distorted central vision, difficulty reading or recognizing faces, or straight lines appearing wavy. Contact us right away if you notice sudden changes in central vision, new distortions, or rapid vision loss.
Regular comprehensive eye exams with a retinal evaluation are crucial for early detection of AMD. Treatment options depend on the stage and type of AMD. Nutritional supplements, such as AREDS2 may slow the progression of dry AMD. Injections can be used with wet AMD to slow or stop further vision loss.
At Coastal Woods Vision, we encourage yearly comprehensive eye exams. Early detection makes a meaningful difference in preserving vision. If you have concerns about macular degeneration, call our office to arrange an evaluation.
