Children’s Eye Health and Safety

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. Children’s eyesight is crucial for their development, learning, and overall well-being. Early detection of vision problems can prevent future complications and support better academic performance and social interactions.

Regular comprehensive eye exams are essential for children, even if they don’t show obvious signs of vision issues. School and vision screenings are not a substitute for comprehensive eye care. Parents and caregivers should ensure that their children receive a thorough eye exam starting between 3 to 5 years old and annual exams thereafter as recommended per the American Optometric Association.

Safety is equally important. Children need proper eye protection during activities that pose a risk of injury, such as sports, biking, and certain arts and crafts. Wearing the right protective eyewear can prevent accidents that cause long-term vision damage.

This Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, schedule an eye exam for your child and educate them about protecting their eyes.
